NEONATAL JAUNDICE
WHAT IS NEONATAL JAUNDICE?
Neonatal jaundice is yellow discoloration of a newborn skin and eyes. Infant jaundice happens because the infant’s blood contains more bilirubin , a yellow pigment of RBCs.
Neonatal jaundice is a common condition, specially in babies born before 38 weeks’ gestation (preterm babies) and some breast fed infants. Baby jaundice mainly occurs because of infant’s liver is not mature enough to get rid of bilirubin in the bloodstream.
Most newborn between 35 weeks’ gestation and full term doesn’t need treatment for jaundice. Rarely, an unusually high blood level of bilirubin can place a newborn at risk of brain damage, mainly in the presence of certain risk factors for severe jaundice.
